Join us on a journey as we share the magic of our Irish Moss and how to incorporate this ocean gem into your daily life.

What is Irish Sea Moss?

Irish Moss is a species of red algae that thrives in the cool Atlantic waters along the rocky coasts of Ireland and other parts of the North Atlantic. Widely known as Sea Moss, we call it Chondrus crispus. Growing in inlets, on the rocks, wild harvested by us, in the pristine cold waters of Maine.

Sea Moss is typically harvested for its concentration of carrageenan, a vegan thickening agent used in baking, cosmetics, and other products. Carrageenan from sea vegetables is a natural source and is perfectly safe to consume. This is not like a carrageenan extract that is commonly used as a thickener in processed foods and beverages.

With its gel-like texture and subtle taste, this fascinating marine plant has been cherished for centuries as a nutritional powerhouse. Irish Moss is rich in essential minerals, vitamins, and antioxidants, providing a remarkable spectrum of health benefits.

Though more research is needed, there are some promising advantages to using the gel form of this underwater ingredient.

How To Make Irish Sea Moss Gel

Sea moss gel is simply water and soaked Irish Moss that has been blended up!

Ingredients
3 cups Distilled Water
1 oz. Irish Moss
Glass bowl
Plastic wrap
Blender
Airtight storage container (a mason jar works well)

Directions

Step 1: Clean and soak. Place 1 oz. into a large glass bowl, then pour in 2 cups of distilled water over the top until the moss is completely submerged. Cover the bowl in plastic wrap, then refrigerate for 12-48 hours.

Step 2: Stir. After 12-48 hours, remove the moss from the bowl and drop it into a blender. Add in 1 cup of distilled water, then blend away! Depending on the texture you’re looking for, blend until you reach the desired consistency. (Less time = chunkier, more time = silky smooth).

Step 3: Store. Your Irish Moss gel should be thick and ready to scoop/pour into your airtight container for storage. You can store your gel for up to 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator. Consume within a week to maintain freshness and quality, using it daily, or as needed.

Your gel will be a purplish color and thick like sour cream. There may be a faint mineral or grassy smell. Most of this smell should diminish significantly after soaking the moss. It should have a very mild taste, slightly minerally but not too much like anything!
